GUITAR LESSONS BY JESS
Guitar Lessons by Jess is a program that has provided approximately 100 hours of free music education. I began the program during the summer break in 2017 and provided 56 hours of free music education on the weekend during June and July of 2017 to children 7-18 years of age in South Dallas and its surrounding communities who do not otherwise have access to music instruction. I was able to sign up 25 students to the summer workshops. I was able to successfully complete these workshops with the help of partnering with the City of Dallas’ Office of Cultural Affairs and raising funds.
This year, during the spring semester, I was able to provide an additional 44 hours of free music education. The workshops were for two hours on Saturday and Sunday during months February, March and April 2018. Additionally, I raised money to continue workshops during July 2018 every Saturday for one hour adding 4 hours of free music education. I have reached more than 25% of my projected six month goal of hosting free guitar workshops and have met my goal to host a workshop during September every Saturday for one hour.
Currently, Guitar Lessons by Jess is being hosted by two locations in the southern sector of Dallas. Top Ten Records in Oak Cliff for children and South Dallas Cultural Center for adults every Saturday. SDCC will host additional workshops during the week for children in the Spring 2019.
In my short time of being able to provide guitar lessons for free, I was able to bring music education to students who did not have access in their neighborhood and was able to create diversity. I have reached my goal to continue this program throughout the year in 2018. My next goal is to become a non-profit organization and continue next year in 2019.
